This post combines two related interviews published by The Korea Economic Daily (Hankyung) detailing my decision to leave Waymo and prepare for a new startup venture. We discussed the future of autonomous driving, the technical differences between Waymo’s LiDAR-centric approach and Tesla’s camera-centric approach, and the societal shifts—like demographic changes and climate change—that I believe will create the next big markets.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel method for view-dependent cloth simulation using dynamically adaptive mesh refinement and coarsening.

Simulating highly detailed cloth is computationally expensive. However, much of that detail is often imperceptible to the viewer depending on the camera’s position. Given a prescribed camera motion, our method adjusts the criteria controlling the mesh refinement to account for both visibility and apparent size within the camera’s view frustum.

Implementing Real-Time Shadow and Environment Mapping

As part of my computer graphics coursework, I built an engine to explore two fundamental rasterization techniques used to dramatically improve the realism of 3D scenes: Shadow Mapping and Environment Mapping.

While rasterization is incredibly fast, it doesn’t naturally handle global light interactions like shadows or reflections. These mapping techniques act as clever workarounds to simulate these physical properties in real-time rendering environments.

Path tracing is a fundamental rendering algorithm that simulates the physical behavior of light to create highly realistic images, calculating global illumination by tracing rays of light as they bounce around a 3D scene.
